Inter-Club Quiz
We
hosted the inter-club quiz in the Autumn. Our normal meeting room would have
been too small for the event, so we held it in the new Study Gallery on the
main campus of The College.
It was difficult to know how many to cater for, but if I say that many went home with doggy bags, I am sure you will get the general idea! After a closely fought contest, one of the Poole Radio Society teams won.
Hamfest
We had our usual stand at Hamfest, on Sunday 21st August 2002, this time in the main marquee.
Day in the Field
The Day in the
Field planned for Sunday 28th July was postponed by a week to Sunday 4th
August. Five 
members braved the wet weather to set up stations on bands
as far apart as 40m and 23cm.
Activity on the hf bands was by battery/solar-powered QRP stations. Antennas used included long wires and mobile whips. Despite poor band conditions, one member made contacts into Poland and Freiberg in Germany - thanks his fluent German, whilst another made a number of contacts, including a station in Manchester on 40m. On the VHF bands, a few contacts were made on 2m fm.
Up on 23cm (1296 MHz), Colin G6MXL tried out a multi-element beam that he had been given. As we were starting to pack up, Paul G0ODP was experimenting with charging a battery using some solar cells. Using various combinations of cells, he was able to obtain charging currents approaching 100mA in overcast skies, which looks quite promising. He said that he’d try and prepare those solar cells for the next trip. On a shiny day he hopes to be getting well over half an amp.
Barbeque
We were lucky
with the weather again for the annual barbeque. This year we took to the
opportunity to try out our new gazebo.
Annual Dinner
The annual dinner
was held at Le Chateau in Canford Cliffs.
