Activity in 2017

Practical Wireless 4m Contest

We took part in the Practical Wireless 4m contest on Sunday 24th September 2017 from Povington Hill (Whiteways) in the Purbeck Hills.  We are pleased to report that we came third in the low power section.

At times we were shrouded in mist, but were sheltered from the worst of the elements thanks to Colin G0JII’s van.

Nevertheless, we had a good time, making a good number of contacts in the low-power section of the contest.

Constructors’ Corner

Several members have expressed interest in building some amateur radio projects.

Projects include a Arduino Controlled Direct Conversion Receiver, PSK Mini Transceiver, Morse Code Sounder. Frequency Counter, Iambic Keyer for Morse Paddle

Some hints and tips on getting started can be found on the construction page.

Norden Station

We operated from Norden Station (near Corfe Castle) on the Swanage Railway over the weekend of 16th and 17th September 2017.

Many visitors came away with a greater awareness of amateur radio.

One lady jumped from the train the moment it stopped and ran across to us, ecstatic to see a Morse key in use!

Kingston Lacey

Over the weekend of 2nd and 3rd September 2017, we operated from Kingston Lacey, attracting a steady stream of visitors, who each had an opportunity to send their names in Morse Code and received a certificate to mark the occasion.

Phil Mayer G0KKL is seen demonstrating Morse to four of our younger visitors.

Yet More Antenna Work

More progress on our antenna system has been made with the installation of a 2m/70cm dual band vertical.  Work still needs to be completed on the connections inside.  Preparatory work to increase the height of the doublet antenna was also undertaken.

The latest G4PRS Newsletter has been produced, covering May/June/July 2017.

Newsletter – Deadline – 20th October 2017

Eddy Cobb is always pleased to receive items for the Newsletter.  The deadline for material for the next issue is Friday 20th October 2017.

Hamfest 2017

The club had its usual stand at Hamfest on Sunday 13th August 2017, which was well supported by club members.

This year we had some high quality test equipment which was eagerly snapped by bargain hunters.  As usual, it was also a great opportunity to catch up with local amateurs and some who had moved out of the area.

Exam Successes

On Friday 4th August 2017 we ran three exam sessions simultaneously.  All three of our candidates passed, one each at Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced levels.

Hamworthy Park Fete

On Saturday 8th July 2017 we operated a demonstration station and had a stand at the Hamworthy Park Fete.

VHF National Field Day

We operated from Worth Matravers for VHF NFD.  This year we focussed our efforts on 6m on the Saturday 1st July 2017.  We used the club’s new 6m antenna on the club’s 10m high mast.

Poole Museum on the Air

As part of the national Museums on the Air activities, we were on the air from Poole Museum on Saturday and Sunday 17th and 18th June 2017.  Whilst most activity was on 40m ssb, there was also a contact on 2m FM.

Charborough Park

We operated from Charborough Park on 20th May 2017.  Activity was on 40m ssb and PSK31 on 20m.
