For courses and exams at our usual St. Aldhelm’s Hall venue, the cost of our course will be £14 which includes the cost of the Foundation Licence Now course book which is published by the Radio Society of Great Britain at £4, and £10 student membership of Poole Radio Society for the duration of the course.  The student membership fee covers a contribution to room hire, locally produced course materials, and membership of Poole Radio Society for the duration of the course.  If at any point during the course you decide to become a full member of Poole Radio Society the student membership fee will be count towards the annual membership subscription.  Please make cheques for the course payable to Poole Radio Society.

Payment for the Foundation Licence Now course book and the student membership fee are due at the start of the course.  When paying for your course you will need to complete an application form and fill out a Records of Achievement card (this is to record assessments as you complete them).  Please make sure that you write as clearly as possible to avoid any mistakes when your application is processed.

In addition the exam entrance fee is £27.50, is payable no later than the second week of the course.  We cannot enter candidates for the exam without payment.  Please make cheques for the exam payable to RSGB.

Course Book

The RSGB have published a new course book (shown below) for the new syllabus for exams taken after 31st August 2019.  Please DO NOT purchase or use the old book (shown above with the X) as it is NOT be suitable for the new syllabus 2019.

Course Structure

The course consists of 6 sessions, each running from 19:30 to 22:00 mainly on Thursday evenings, followed by a 45 minute exam.  The sessions will be run by several tutors.  Several of the sessions will include some practical assessments which must be completed in order to obtain your Foundation Licence.  The exam consists of 26 multiple choice questions and you will need to get at least 19 answers correct in order to pass and obtain your Foundation Licence.  You must complete all of the practical assessments in order to be able to sit the exam.

Some weeks you will be given a handout covering that week’s lesson.  You can make your own notes and ask questions on any part of the lesson that you do not understand.  We are here to help you.  You’ll be expected to read the Foundation Licence Now course book in your own time and for some of the sessions there will be a little preparatory or supplementary homework.

Terms and Conditions

You will need to attend all the sessions so that we can make sure that everybody is up to date with both the tuition and practical assessments.

If you miss one of the sessions it will not be possible to repeat the lesson later in the same course.  Contact the course co-ordinator who will advise you which parts of the course you have missed and tell you which sections of Foundation Licence Now to study at home.  If you miss a session which involves practical assessment, unfortunately you’ll have to wait until the next course in order to cover that session.  You must complete all of the practical assessments in order to be able to sit the exam.

If you miss or fail your exam, you will not be able to claim a refund, but you will be able to enter for another exam for £27.50 without going through the whole course again.  This fee is levied by the Radio Society of Great Britain and may be changed at any time.

If you are under 18 years of age, you must obtain your parents permission to undertake the course, and at least one parent or other adult member of your family must attend each lesson.  Parents are very welcome to take the course on the same basis as everyone else.
